What is Second Life RLV
RLV means “Restrained Love Viewer”, and its functions can be turned on in some third-party Second Life viewers like Phoenix, Singularity, and Restrained Love. Enabling RLV is not necessary for playing on Dutchie’s Second Life BDSM sex furniture, but can add depth to the experience of control.
Having RLV turned on in combination with wearing a relay, permits others or traps to control your avatar. Others can force you to do things, like sit on objects and hold you captive there.
Please note: RLV commands will have NO influence over you if you are not wearing a scripted object that works as a relay.
Many Second Life collars like Dutchie’s collars include a relay, but it can also be a simple hud, in the form of a small dot on your screen. If you remove the relay, no one can force you to do anything. You decide when you would like to give control away.
RLV Manual
[CAPTURE] gives the capturer the option to trap a captive on Dutchie BDSM or dungeon furniture and for how long, from 1 to 60 minutes. He does not have to be on the rings to do that, only to click them.
[RELEASE] is obviously to release the captive.
[MORE…] gives 5 options for restriction:
- Gag/ Unbag: Unable to speak in open chat.
- Touch/NoTouch: Unable to click the surroundings and the menu.
- Mute IM/Unmute IM: The ability to send or receive IM’s.Avatars that im the captive get the message: “The Resident you messaged is prevented from reading your instant messages at the moment, please try again later.” The captive gets the message: “name avatar: *** IM blocked by your viewer”, so it knows who called and can call back later.
- NoNames/Names: The ability to see the names of avatars around.
- NoMinimap/Minimap: The ability to see the minimap.
- NoMap/Map: The ability to see the map.
Important: Second Life RLV only works under certain conditions
Second Life RLV furniture only attempts RLV actions when all required conditions are met at the moment of interaction.
RLV behaviour depends on:
- viewer RLV/RLVa settings
- granted permissions
- correct role assignment
- the presence of two avatars
- the submissive’s relay or collar configuration
If any of these conditions are missing, no RLV action will occur.
1. Role assignment
- The avatar clicking the furniture is always treated as the Dominant / capturer
- The furniture then looks for another nearby avatar with RLV enabled
- That second avatar is treated as the submissive
You cannot capture yourself.
If you click the furniture while alone, or when no second avatar is present, nothing will happen.
2. Two avatars are required
RLV capture always requires:
- one Dominant (the clicking avatar)
- one submissive with RLV enabled, within range
If only one avatar is present, or if both avatars click the furniture themselves, there is no valid capture target.
3. Viewer RLV / RLVa must be enabled (submissive)
RLV must be enabled in the submissive’s viewer and permissions must be accepted.
Example (Firestorm):
Preferences → Firestorm → General → Enable RLVa
Viewer updates can reset RLV settings.
If RLV is disabled or permissions were declined, capture will fail.
4. Submissive relay / collar requirements
The submissive must be wearing an active RLV relay or collar that accepts commands from external objects.
Required:
- Relay or collar is worn
- External objects are allowed
- Permission requests are accepted
- Relay is not set to Off, Blocked, or Owner-only
- Some collars require the Dominant to be set as temporary owner or to be within range
If the relay or collar blocks external objects, the furniture will not receive RLV confirmation and capture will not occur.
5. Expected behaviour
- Clicking the furniture alone does nothing
- Clicking while only one avatar is present does nothing
- Clicking when the submissive does not have RLV/RLVa enabled does nothing
- Clicking when the submissive’s relay or collar blocks external commands does nothing
This is expected behaviour, not a malfunction.
Summary
RLV capture works only when all of the following are true:
- Two avatars are present
- The Dominant clicks the furniture
- The submissive has RLV enabled in the viewer
- Permissions are granted
- The submissive’s relay or collar accepts external commands
