Second Life’s default camera is positioned quite high above and behind your avatar, looking down at the world. This gives you a good overview, but it can also make interiors feel smaller, furniture appear less naturally proportioned, and your avatar feel somewhat disconnected from the environment.
Dutchie recommends the lower camera preset for a more natural and immersive view of Second Life. It brings the camera down closer to your avatar’s eye level, similar to the perspective commonly used in modern third-person games. Rooms feel more spacious, furniture is viewed from a more realistic angle, and you feel more present in the environment rather than looking down on it from above.
This view works particularly well with Dutchie furniture and homes, which are designed around realistic proportions. It also brings you closer to poses, interactions, and facial expressions when using animated furniture.
You no longer need to manually change camera settings to get this perspective. The preset is already built into both the Second Life Viewer and Firestorm — it is just rather well hidden.
How to change your camera view
Firestorm: Click the Camera Controls icon in the upper-right corner of your viewer. You can also find it under Avatar → Camera Controls. Choose TPP View.
Second Life Viewer: Open Me from the menu at the top of your viewer, then choose Camera Controls. In the upper-left corner of the Camera Controls window, you will see four camera position buttons.
The third button is the standard Second Life camera view. Click the fourth button to switch to the lower camera position recommended by Dutchie.
You can switch between the different camera positions at any time. Try the standard and lower views in the same room to see how much the camera angle changes your perception of the space.
Add Camera Controls to your toolbar
You can also add the Camera Controls button (the eye icon) to your viewer toolbar.
Open the viewer’s Toolbar Buttons window and drag the Camera Controls button to your preferred toolbar. Toolbar buttons can be placed at the bottom, left, or right side of the viewer.
Once added, simply click the eye icon to open Camera Controls whenever you want to switch between camera presets.
